Suitcase Murder Trial

Alcoholism. That's how Sarah Boone's defense began their opening statements. Her lead attorney James Owens told jurors about the alcohol addiction she and her Jorge Torres dealt with and how it often mixed in with domestic violence. Owens argued that the suitcase Torres was zipped in was a physical restraint to block a potential attack in Boone's attempt at self-defense. Domestic violence was a running theme in the relationship between the defendant and the victim.

S1, EP14 "Lead Detective's Conduct"

Cross-examination began on lead detective Chelsey Koepsell. It came after the jury listened and watched the police interrogation of the defendant two days after Jorge Torres suffocated to death inside of a suitcase. Jurors learned of the police procedure in the early part of the murder investigation of Jorge Torres. Detective Koepsell recalled taking Sarah Boone's cellphone without her consent because there was incriminating evidence on it.

S1, EP15 "Defendant Takes The Stand"

Sarah Boone took the stand in her own murder trial. It came after the prosecution rested their case against her for intentionally killing Jorge Torres, her boyfriend, she was living with. Jurors listened to the defendant give them the backstory of how she met Torres and began their intimate relationship. Domestic violence was her defense. But she testified that during the very hours Torres was suffocating in the suitcase she simply had enough wine and fell asleep.

S1, EP16 "Suitcase Carrying Death"

I'm always afraid and always scared. That's what Sarah Boone told jurors on the witness stand. She tried to explain away the cell phone video she recorded while Jorge Torres was inside the suitcase pleading to get out because he couldn't breathe. Battered women's syndrome was a big part of her case. Boone testified that initially it was funny when her boyfriend was able to even fit inside that small suitcase. But then she claimed that she only left him in it because she feared for her life.

S1, EP13 "Denial Of Intentionality"

Jurors watched Sarah Boone deny any intention to the murder of her boyfriend in her second police interrogation. Detectives were in the beginning of their investigation trying to figure out what led to Jorge Torres being found dead in a suitcase. The first police interview happened at the crime scene. The next day after police did the initial part of their investigation that concluded it was a homicide and was seeking a confession out of her for her role in the murder.
