Prosecutors wanted to prove that there was a physical link to the defendant found on the remains of her stepfather, who was in a pile of trash in a driveway. The jury's attention was shifted to this physical evidence that was analyzed in a crime lab. On the stand was a criminalist who examined crime scene evidence. Prosecutors wanted to eliminate any other suspects in this case.

Prosecutors tried to show that only Jade Janks had concocted and carried out the murder of her stepfather, Tom Merriman. On the stand was the criminalist who examined crime scene evidence for DNA. The Defense wanted to raise all possibilities about the DNA in this case. According to her attorney, this wasn't even a murder since the cause of death was an overdose. And, if it was a murder than more people should be implicated.

Jurors heard more testimony from a criminalist who worked this case. Investigators say they found overwhelming DNA evidence that linked the defendant to the death of her stepdad, Tom Merriman. Next, another criminalist who examined evidence linked to Merriman's death explained to the jury how much of the defendant's DNA profile they uncovered. More likely than not was how DNA test results came back, claiming to show Jade Janks' involvement in her stepdad's death.
S1, EP16 "Cause Of Death"
Jurors listened to the expert testimony of the deputy medical examiner. Dr. Greg Pizarro did the autopsy on Tom Merriman and made his conclusion about the cause and manner of his death. The cause of Merriman's death was an overdose from a drug typically used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Jurors would learn later what medications Merriman was on and what he was allegedly abusing.
