Closing arguments began after the State's psychiatrist wrapped up his testimony. Carly Gregg was just a 14-year-old teen when she killed her mom, Ashley Smylie. Prosecutors charged her as an adult. Instead of taking the State's plea deal, Gregg was confident that they could convince jurors that she was mentally ill when she killed her mom. If convicted she faced life in prison without the possibility of parole.

This was the final time Carly Gregg's attorneys would address the jury trying to convince them that she was mentally ill when she killed Ashley Smylie, her mom. Her team reiterated their point that Gregg dealt with a mental health crisis at the time of the murder and, therefore, did not know the wrongfulness of her actions.

The verdict arrived after just two hours in jury deliberations. Carly Gregg faced life in prison if she was convicted for murder, attempted murder, and tampering with crime scene evidence. Prosecutors told jurors that the defendant was a wayward teenager who's secrets were exposed to parents that she tried hard so hard to impress. Gregg's defense claimed mental illness took the best of her and resulted in her violent actions.

The Defense brought in the police officer who arrested her for the murder of her mother, Ashley Smylie, and the attempted murder of her stepfather, Heath Smylie. The stepdad claimed that she ran away after the shooting by jumping the backyard fence. Unedited portions of police bodycam footage was shown to jurors. They documented the moment Carly Gregg was caught in her neighborhood, arrested and then brought back to the crime scene.
