Coast Guard Cape Disappointment: Pacific Northwest
Cape Disappointment, located at the mouth of the Columbia River in southwestern Washington, is the largest Coast Guard search-and-rescue station on the Northwest coast of the United States. And it's a busy station, with a number of shipwrecks each year near the river's entrance, which is known as "The Graveyard of the Pacific." The series -- part of the Weather Channel's "Coast Guard" franchise that also includes series about operations in Alaska and Florida -- follows the men and women stationed at Cape Disappointment who respond to as many as 400 rescue calls annually, many of which are caused by strong, wind-driven ocean swells during winter storms.
S1, EP7 "Bracing for Impact"
A cutter attempts to cross the bar in rough water; a gravely injured ice climber is rescued in the mountains; a young man is teetering on the edge of a cliff.
S1, EP12 "Ready For Pickup"
Air Station Astoria faces steep terrain as they rescue two injured teens from the mountains, and battle high seas to rescue a boat crewman who has fallen. Station Cape Disappointment employs a new method to rescue men stranded on an island.
S1, EP13 "High and Dry"
Station Cape Disappointment steps into action when a sailor is left high and dry; Air Station Astoria takes to the coast when the tides close in on a surfer, trapped in a cove.
S1, EP11 "Hard Aground"
Crashing waves and changing tides force vessels aground, causing injury to mariners and damage to vessels.
