Dutch KNVB Beker
The Dutch KNVB Beker is Holland’s biggest club cup competition for professional and amateur football teams. Established in 1898, the tournament has a long history of thrilling matches between the country’s most popular clubs, including Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, and AZ Alkmaar. The tournament follows an annual cup season format in which participating teams can be from any of the Netherlands’ football associations. During the tournament, teams play each other in a series of rounds, culminating in a two-legged final between the top two teams. In the past, the competition has also featured playoff rounds, where teams can battle a one-off match for a place in the quarter-finals. In its 123-year history, the Dutch KNVB Beker has featured a number of memorable matches. For instance, in 2001, Dutch giants Ajax and Dutch Eredivisie champions Feyenoord took part in a thrilling 5-3 match, which was eventually won by Feyenoord. Likewise, in 1996, Willem II became the first team ever from the second division to reach the final, a feat which they repeated in 2007. In terms of its players, the Dutch KNVB Beker has seen some of Netherlands’ finest footballers take part in its tournament. For example, Dutch internationals, Johan Cruyff and Ronald Koeman, both played in the 1983 and 1984 finals respectively. Other notable stars in the competition include Denis Bergkamp, Arjen Robben, and even current moment Dutch superstar, Virgil van Dijk. In 2020, Dutch KNVB Beker history was made when Joël Veldwijk scored six goals in one match for the Eerste Divisie side, PEC Zwolle. The feat was extraordinary especially considering that in the last 18 years no player had ever scored more than four in a single fixture. The Dutch KNVB Beker continues to be one of the most exciting cup competitions in the world, with passionate fans travelling from all over the Netherlands to attend its live matches. With a long history, great players, and thrilling matches, the tournament is a testament to the greatness of Dutch football and a top-tier example of what a cup competition should be.
