The National Hockey League (NHL) is a winter pro ice hockey league, founded on November 26, 1917 in Montreal, Canada. The league once consisted of only six teams in the US and Canada, with the original six teams being the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. Although there have been several expansions over the years, the original six teams remain in the league. Today, the NHL consists of 31 teams, including 24 in the US and seven in Canada, and is considered to be one of the premier professional ice hockey leagues in the world. The NHL season consists of 162 games per regular season, where teams battle to get the coveted Stanley Cup and represent their country in the playoffs. The playoffs begin after the regular season ends and feature 16 teams competing for the Stanley Cup. During playoffs, the format is a best-of-seven series for each playoffs round. The most popular players in the current season include struggling Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs; big name Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues; Russian Magician Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins; Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers; and multi-talented Patrice Bergeron from the Boston Bruins. The NHL has several prestigious awards each season, including Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player displaying excellence each season; the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the top rookie player; the Ted Lindsay Award, chosen by the players themselves to recognize the best player each year; and the James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to the top defenseman in the league. Hockey's history with the NHL dates back to the early 1900s, and its history is present to this day in the form of records and statistics. Some of the most iconic records in hockey against teams include the Detroit Red Wings with most consecutive seasons with at least one player scoring 90 points; the Montreal Canadiens with the most Stanley Cup Championships (24); and the Toronto Maple Leafs with the most consecutive playoff appearances (29). During the 2020-2021 season, Edmonton Oilers superstar, Connor McDavid, broke a long-standing NHL record of Hart Trophy winners scoring more than 120 points with his 126 points. With its rich history and current figures in the ice hockey arena, the NHL continues to be a beloved worldwide professional league and brings entertainment to its viewers across the world.

New York Islanders at Montreal Canadiens
NHLThe Canadiens kick off a season-high five-game homestand by playing the Islanders. Montreal is 5-5-2 at Centre Bell. New York is 5-5-4 on the road. The Islanders claimed the first meeting of the season, 4-3 on Oct. 19, in a nine-round shootout.
St. Louis Blues at Winnipeg Jets
NHLThe Jets return home after a season-high six-game trip to face the Blues. Winnipeg is 9-1-0 at Canada Life Centre. St. Louis is 6-6-1 on the road. The Jets have won four straight meetings, and 10 of the last 11, following a 3-2 verdict on Oct. 22.

Calgary Flames at Columbus Blue Jackets
NHLThe Flames visit the Blue Jackets. Sean Monahan (CBJ) has six points in four games against the team that drafted him sixth overall in 2013. The late Johnny Gaudreau wowed crowds in Calgary and Columbus during his memorable 11-year NHL career.
Tampa Bay Lightning at Nashville Predators
NHLThe Lightning and Predators end their season series with this match in the Music City. Steven Stamkos assisted on both Nashville goals on Oct. 28, but Nick Paul spoiled the ex-captain's return to Tampa Bay with the overtime winner in a 3-2 victory.
Vancouver Canucks at Buffalo Sabres
NHLThe Canucks' wrestling-induced six-game road trip continues as they battle the Sabres. Last season, Vancouver swept Buffalo for the first time since 2019-2020 with a pair of one-goal wins. Elias Pettersson (VAN) scored twice in those contests.
Montreal Canadiens at New York Rangers
NHLThe Rangers return to Madison Square Garden to face the Original Six rival Canadiens. New York is 5-4-1 at the World's Most Famous Arena in 2024-25. The Rangers have won three straight meetings by a combined 19-8 line following a 7-2 triumph Oct. 22.
Carolina Hurricanes at Florida Panthers
NHLThe defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers complete a home-and-home series with the Eastern Conference foe Hurricanes. Carolina has lost three straight at Amerant Bank Arena, including two in the 2023 East final that Florida won in four games.
Toronto Maple Leafs at Tampa Bay Lightning
NHLThe Maple Leafs end a two-game Sunshine State swing by facing the Lightning. Toronto's four-game win streak was snapped with a 5-1 loss at Florida on Nov. 27. William Nylander (TOR) scored twice in a 5-2 triumph over Tampa Bay on Oct. 21.
