NHL

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a winter pro ice hockey league, founded on November 26, 1917 in Montreal, Canada. The league once consisted of only six teams in the US and Canada, with the original six teams being the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. Although there have been several expansions over the years, the original six teams remain in the league. Today, the NHL consists of 31 teams, including 24 in the US and seven in Canada, and is considered to be one of the premier professional ice hockey leagues in the world. The NHL season consists of 162 games per regular season, where teams battle to get the coveted Stanley Cup and represent their country in the playoffs. The playoffs begin after the regular season ends and feature 16 teams competing for the Stanley Cup. During playoffs, the format is a best-of-seven series for each playoffs round. The most popular players in the current season include struggling Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs; big name Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues; Russian Magician Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins; Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers; and multi-talented Patrice Bergeron from the Boston Bruins. The NHL has several prestigious awards each season, including Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player displaying excellence each season; the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the top rookie player; the Ted Lindsay Award, chosen by the players themselves to recognize the best player each year; and the James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to the top defenseman in the league. Hockey's history with the NHL dates back to the early 1900s, and its history is present to this day in the form of records and statistics. Some of the most iconic records in hockey against teams include the Detroit Red Wings with most consecutive seasons with at least one player scoring 90 points; the Montreal Canadiens with the most Stanley Cup Championships (24); and the Toronto Maple Leafs with the most consecutive playoff appearances (29). During the 2020-2021 season, Edmonton Oilers superstar, Connor McDavid, broke a long-standing NHL record of Hart Trophy winners scoring more than 120 points with his 126 points. With its rich history and current figures in the ice hockey arena, the NHL continues to be a beloved worldwide professional league and brings entertainment to its viewers across the world.

Historic rivals clash to start their campaigns as the Maple Leafs host the Canadiens. Toronto outscored Montreal 12-2 in the final two meetings of 2022-23 to earn a season-series split. Auston Matthews (TOR) notched seven points in the four games.

Colorado Avalanche at Winnipeg Jets

The Avalanche and Jets duel in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series. Winnipeg dominated the regular-season series against Colorado, winning all three meetings by a combined 17-4 scoreline. Josh Morrissey (WPG) notched seven points.

New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes

The Islanders try to hunker down against the Hurricanes in Game 2 of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal. New York went with Semyon Varlamov between the pipes in Game 1, but Frederik Andersen starred for Carolina with 33 saves in a 3-1 triumph.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins

The surging Maple Leafs visit the Bruins for Game 7 of their East quarterfinal. Toronto, which trailed 3-1 in the series, prevailed 2-0 in Game 6. The Maple Leafs haven't ousted the Bruins from the postseason since 1959, losing their last six tries.

New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes

The never-say-die Hurricanes host the reeling Rangers for Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Carolina scored the final four goals, all in the third period, to stun New York 4-1 in Game 5 and trim its series deficit to 3-2.

Washington Capitals at Detroit Red Wings

Tampa Bay Lightning at Florida Panthers

The Lightning try to live to see another day in Game 5 of their first-round series against the Panthers. Tampa Bay avoided a sweep by doubling up Florida 6-3 in Game 4 on home ice. Matthew Tkachuk leads the Cats with seven points in four games.

Florida Panthers at Boston Bruins

The Bruins try to force a winner-take-all match against the Panthers in Game 6 of their Eastern semifinal. Charlie McAvoy scored his first of the playoffs and added an assist as Boston staved off elimination with a 2-1 win over Florida in Game 6.

New York Rangers at Florida Panthers

The Panthers try to book another Stanley Cup Final berth as they host the Rangers in Game 6 of the East finals. Anton Lundell and Sam Bennett scored in the third period to push Florida to a 3-2 victory over New York in Game 5, and a 3-2 series lead.

Edmonton Oilers at Florida Panthers

The hungry Panthers welcome the Oilers to the edge of the Everglades for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Florida makes its second straight final appearance after losing in 2023 to Vegas. The Panthers won both games against the Oilers this season.

Edmonton Oilers at Florida Panthers

The Panthers lead the Oilers 1-0 entering Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 Edmonton shots in a 3-0 Florida Game 1 win, the first shutout to start a final since Roberto Luongo's 36 saves led Vancouver by Boston 1-0 in 2011.

The Oilers try to put up a fight against the Panthers in Game 3 as the Stanley Cup Final shifts to Canada. Evan Rodrigues netted a pair of third-period goals to push Florida to a 4-1 victory over Edmonton in Game 2 as well as a 2-0 series lead.
