The National Hockey League (NHL) is a winter pro ice hockey league, founded on November 26, 1917 in Montreal, Canada. The league once consisted of only six teams in the US and Canada, with the original six teams being the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. Although there have been several expansions over the years, the original six teams remain in the league. Today, the NHL consists of 31 teams, including 24 in the US and seven in Canada, and is considered to be one of the premier professional ice hockey leagues in the world. The NHL season consists of 162 games per regular season, where teams battle to get the coveted Stanley Cup and represent their country in the playoffs. The playoffs begin after the regular season ends and feature 16 teams competing for the Stanley Cup. During playoffs, the format is a best-of-seven series for each playoffs round. The most popular players in the current season include struggling Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs; big name Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues; Russian Magician Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins; Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers; and multi-talented Patrice Bergeron from the Boston Bruins. The NHL has several prestigious awards each season, including Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player displaying excellence each season; the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the top rookie player; the Ted Lindsay Award, chosen by the players themselves to recognize the best player each year; and the James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to the top defenseman in the league. Hockey's history with the NHL dates back to the early 1900s, and its history is present to this day in the form of records and statistics. Some of the most iconic records in hockey against teams include the Detroit Red Wings with most consecutive seasons with at least one player scoring 90 points; the Montreal Canadiens with the most Stanley Cup Championships (24); and the Toronto Maple Leafs with the most consecutive playoff appearances (29). During the 2020-2021 season, Edmonton Oilers superstar, Connor McDavid, broke a long-standing NHL record of Hart Trophy winners scoring more than 120 points with his 126 points. With its rich history and current figures in the ice hockey arena, the NHL continues to be a beloved worldwide professional league and brings entertainment to its viewers across the world.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Columbus Blue Jackets
NHLThe Blue Jackets skate with the Maple Leafs. In 2023-24, Columbus won two of three meetings with Toronto, winning each 6-5 in overtime. The late Johnny Gaudreau scored the game winner to seal a season-series victory for the Jackets on Dec. 29, 2023.
Philadelphia Flyers at Washington Capitals
NHLThe Flyers and Capitals complete a home-and-home series with this match at Capital One Arena. Washington is 2-1-0 at home, dropping its opener to New Jersey but knocking off Dallas and Vegas. Tom Wilson scored in all three games for the Capitals.
St. Louis Blues at Toronto Maple Leafs
NHLThe Maple Leafs host the Blues. Toronto head coach Craig Berube guided St. Louis for parts of six seasons, winning the Stanley Cup in 2019. Bobby McMann recorded his first career hat trick to help the Leafs top the Blues 4-1 in this building Feb. 13.
Dallas Stars at Boston Bruins
NHLThe Bruins return to TD Garden in search of their fifth straight victory over the Stars. The last three meetings have been one-goal affairs with two extending past regulation time. The Bruins went 2-1-0 on their initial homestand of 2024-25.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Winnipeg Jets
NHLThe Jets end a homestand against the Penguins. These teams completed a trade late in the offseason, with Winnipeg shipping Michigan product Rutger McGroarty to Pittsburgh for prospect Brayden Yager. The Pens assigned McGroarty to the AHL on Oct. 16.
Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks
NHLThe struggling Avalanche head back on the road for a three-game trip, starting with the Sharks. Colorado has won nine in a row against San Jose, sweeping the last three season series, but is 0-1-0 away from home after an 8-4 drubbing by Vegas.
Los Angeles Kings at Anaheim Ducks
NHLKevin Fiala and the Kings try to resume their dominance of the rival Ducks. Los Angeles has won nine of the last 10 get-togethers after taking three of four in 2023-24. Fiala registered four goals and an assist against Anaheim last season.
Tampa Bay Lightning at Toronto Maple Leafs
NHLThe Lightning stay in Ontario to play the Maple Leafs. In 2023-24, Tampa Bay earned points in all four matchups with Toronto, going 2-0-2. Nikita Kucherov, the NHL's 2023-24 Art Ross Trophy winner, paced all skaters with 12 points in those contests.
New York Rangers at Montreal Canadiens
NHLFrozen Frenzy continues as the Canadiens host the Rangers in an Original Six clash. Artemi Panarin has raced into early Art Ross contention with six goals and 12 points as New York started 4-0-1. Cole Caufield also has six goals for Montreal (2-3-1).
