College Softball

College Softball is a rapidly increasing, popular sport in the United States. It is currently governed by the NCAA and consists of over 300 women's teams from member institutions across the country. The game is generally similar to professional softball, with some differences in rules. Generally, fast-pitch softball is the form of the game played at the college level, with seven players per team and a maximum of seven innings played. The college season usually consists of around 50 to 60 regular-season games, in addition to a series of postseason tournaments for the top teams. Teams often use the non-conference games to prepare for regional conference tournaments and then ultimately the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City each May. Today, the college game often features more talent than ever before, as some of the nation's best players have left high school to participate in and bolster the collegiate softball leagues. Popular teams in softball today include the Alabama Crimson Tide, Arizona Wildcats, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, UCLA Bruins, and Florida Gators. Star players like Kelly Barnhill, Giselle Juarez, Rachel Garcia and Hannah Rogers are talented leaders making strong pushes for national championships across the country. In “the year of the pitcher”, these stars dominate the diamond with their dominance of opposing hitters. Historically, there have been a wide array of successful teams in college softball. The Arizona Wildcats have five NCAA title wins, the UCLA Bruins have 12, the Florida Gators have two and the Oklahoma Sooners have three. Iconic coaches like Mike Candrea of Arizona, John Rittman of Stanford, Gary Ward of Arizona State, and Ken Eriksen of South Florida have all made lasting impressions on the sport. The college softball season can be a roller coaster, full of surprises and up and down swings for teams and individual players that make the season end in a thrilling conclusion with the NCAA Women's College World Series. It's an exciting time for the sport of college softball, and the players, teams, and fans are all looking forward to the future of this competitive and popular sport.
