Canadian Premier League Soccer

The Canadian Premier League (CPL) is an all-Canadian soccer league established in 2019. Composed of eight teams that span coastal, mountain, and prairie regions of Canada, the CPL is Canada’s first national soccer league since the 1986-87 professional season. The CPL is affiliated with the Canadian Soccer Association and is the only professional Canadian soccer league that carries the association’s exclusive sanctioning as a Canadian Professional Soccer League. The eight CPL teams are Cavalry FC from Calgary, FC Edmonton from Edmonton, Forge FC from Hamilton, HFX Wanderers FC from Halifax, Pacific FC from Langford, Valour FC from Winnipeg, York9 FC from York, and Ottawa-based Atlético Ottawa. Popular teams in the league include Cavalry FC, Forge FC, York9 FC, and HFX Wanderers FC. Popular current players in the CPL include Ryan Telfer (York9 FC), Matthew Srbely (Forge FC), and Omar Kreim (Valour FC). The CPL season features 30 regular-season matches per team, with all clubs facing each team in the league twice (once at home and once away). The top two teams with the highest point totals after the regular season advance to the League Championship Finals, hosted by the team with the most points during the regular season standings. If the regular season results have both teams on equal points, a one-game Aggregate Goal Series will be played. The League Championship Finals consists of two legs played in each team’s respective home stadium with the total aggregate score determining the CPL champion. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 CPL season was suspended in March 2020 and resumed in late August. Going into the 2021 season, CPL takes 15% of all revenue earned from the sale of CPL and international match tickets and distributes the revenue among the participating clubs based on attendance performance. The CPL’s long-term goals are to develop and showcase players and coaches from the Canadian domestic system while promoting competitive soccer across the nation. The goal of the league is to promote and develop Canadian talent while gaining recognition from international soccer federations. A major focus of the CPL is providing opportunities for Canadian players to participate in an organized league in Canada, and is intended to give young Canadian talent a platform to showcase their skills on a higher level. The league will provide an opportunity for Canada’s soccer contenders to gain experience and compete at the highest level of the sport.
