Campeonato Nacional de Hóquei em Patins
The Campeonato Nacional de Hóquei em Patins, commonly known as Liga Portuguesa or LNH, is the premier professional competition for hóquei em patins in Portugal. Founded in 1949 as the Liga Portuguesa, the competition has become one of the biggest in the world, host to some of the top teams and players of the sport. Popular teams such as Benfica, FC Porto, Sporting CP, Braves and Estrelas, and Braga have all consistently competed in the Liga Portuguesa for many years, with Benfica being the most successful team, having won the competition a total of 21 times. The Liga Portuguesa follows a single round-robin format season, in which every team is scheduled to play every other twice, once at home and once away, totaling 18 matches. At the end of the season, the top four teams in the table qualify for the play-offs which determine the winner of the national title. The two semifinalists are the teams that finish first and fourth and the confrontations may be 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4. The winner of the semifinal is determined by the aggregate score of the first two games played, the first game being held at the home of the fourth and the second game being held at home of the first. The winner of the semifinal advances to the final, where they face the second and third placed teams in the regular season. The history of the LNH has been highly acclaimed, producing some of the greatest players in the world and some of the most thrilling games. The likes of Rui Benedito, the all-time top scorer in the liga, Ricardo Jorge, the most decorated player, and Luis Madeira, the only player to win the Golden Boot four times, are but a few of the players who have made their mark in the history of the LNH. Overall, the Campeonato Nacional de Hóquei em Patins has been an incredibly popular and successful competition in Portugal, captivating audiences in Portugal and around the world with the speed, skill and action of hóquei em patins. With the finest teams and players in the world competing for glory in an action-packed season that culminates in dramatic playoffs, the LNH is sure to continue to entertain and engage audiences for many more years to come.
