Prison warden Sven Sorenson (Marlon Brando) uses corrupt judge Rolf Rausenberg (Donald Sutherland) to enforce his wishes, making both men feared by their small town's residents. When Sven's twin daughters are impregnated by Bud (Charlie Sheen) and Larry (Thomas Haden Church), he forces both couples to marry. Fed up with tyrannical Sven, his sons-in-law decide to rob a passing train and make their escape. Meanwhile, Rolf's FBI agent daughter, Karen (Mira Sorvino), arrives to investigate Sven.

In the present, artist Tom Warshaw recalls his traumatic coming of age. As a 13-year-old growing up in New York City in 1973, Tom hangs out with Pappass, a mentally disabled man. With Tom's mother battling depression after the death of her husband, the young boy is left to his own devices. When Tom develops a crush on schoolmate Melissa, Pappass feels abandoned and begins behaving erratically.

Boston store owner Jake (Jay Jablonski) still loves his ex-girlfriend, Isabella (Marisa Petroro), who's now a married mom. Vince Hopgood is a recently divorced theater owner with some serious tax problems. When Vince learns that a new tax loophole for live-in gay couples would allow him to keep his property, he asks his best friend, Ralph, to pose as his lover. In order to fool the taxman, the gruff, small-town Aussie pals make a clueless attempt to act like a homosexual couple. Along the way, they befriend actual gays and reevaluate stereotypes of the gay community.

The day after high-school senior Henry Burke (Matt Bush) smokes his very first joint, his principal (Michael Chiklis) institutes a mandatory drug test for all students. Milwaukee Brewers player Stan Ross (Bernie Mac) angers his teammates by retiring during a 1995 playoff game after making the 3,000th base hit required to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame. Nine years later, a clerical error is discovered, invalidating three of the hits and keeping Ross from the ultimate baseball honor. The 47-year-old player convinces the Brewers to let him rejoin the team to make his last three hits, and sheds his selfish nature as he rediscovers his love of the game.
