Ambush

The year is 1878, and the young daughter of a U.S. general is kidnapped and taken far into the Apache lands of the Arizona Territory. Prospector Ward Kinsman (Robert Taylor) is enlisted to find the girl because he knows the area well. Though Ward is initially skeptical of the dangerous task, he changes his tune when he finds out that the captive's gorgeous sister, Ann (Arlene Dahl), will be coming along. Unfortunately, their mission and potential romance is soon interrupted by an Apache attack.

Private detective James Barlow (Randolph Scott) is sent to Indiana to infiltrate the ranks of the four Reno Brothers (Denver Pyle, Forrest Tucker, J. After attracting the Renos' attention with a staged train robbery, Barlow gets in deeper when he strikes up a romance with their sister, Laura (Mala Powers). Gradually, Barlow devises a strategy to set the brothers up for ambush in another train robbery.

Canadian Mountie O'Rourke (Alan Ladd) and his Cree companion, Cajou (Jay Silverheels), come upon the scorched remains of a wagon train and find beautiful lone survivor Grace (Shelley Winters), who claims the attack was carried out by American Indians. Realizing the attack is only the beginning, the men fear war between the American Sioux, the Canadian Cree and the whites. O'Rourke must now protect his troops from further attack and save Grace from being extradited to Montana on a murder charge.

Ben is determined to get revenge against the killers, and in pursuing them reluctantly enlists the aid a younger gunfighter, Lee Sutton (Chad Everett).

Cattle rancher Sam Brassfield (Robert Taylor) engages in a war of wills with power-hungry Clay Mathews (Robert Middleton), whose allies include the brother of Brassfield's betrothed. In trying to muscle out the competition, Mathews frames Brassfield for damage to another rancher's property, nearly getting both men killed. But instead they join forces and enlist the help of President Chester A. Arthur (Larry Gates), leading to a shift in power and tension that can be settled only with bullets.

After the Civil War, King Cameron (Howard Keel) moves to Texas, purchases a cattle ranch and settles down with his wife, Cordelia (Ava Gardner). They find themselves at the mercy of Jose Esqueda (Anthony Quinn), a local bandit who has terrorized the town with his adoptive brother, Rio (Robert Taylor). Rio is kidnapped when he tries to mount an attack on the ranch and agrees to work for Cameron so he can be close to Cordelia. Though he's incensed at Rio's betrayal, Jose vows to get him back.
