The First Texan

Having left his post as governor of Tennessee, Gen. Sam Houston (Joel McCrea) resettles in Mexican territory along the southwest U.S. border. He soon sets his sights on reclaiming the land under the aegis of Texas independence, while romancing post-divorce new love interest Katherine Delaney (Felicia Farr). His efforts eventually lead to the historic Battle of San Jacinto and a very clever bit of battlefield strategy by Houston in his fight against forces led by Gen. Santa Anna.

Saddle Tramp

Unexpected fatherhood finds carefree cowboy Chuck Connor (Joel McCrea) when a visit with a buddy of his takes an unfortunate turn. When Chuck stops by to catch up with his friend and widower, Slim (John Ridgely), disaster strikes after Slim takes a fatal fall off Chuck's horse. Left as the only person who can look after Slim's four sons, Chuck brings the young boys on the road with him and tries to juggle parenting with his familiar life as a rootless ranch hand.

Frenchie Fontaine (Shelley Winters), orphaned at 15, has made a comfortable living running a New Orleans casino. Now, moving west to track down those responsible for her father's death, she buys a casino near a town where Pete Lambert (Paul Kelly), one of her father's killers, resides, and enlists the help of the local sheriff, Tom Banning (Joel McCrea). A series of mishaps unexpectedly lands Tom in prison -- and Frenchie, having fallen in love with him, is left on her own to sort out the mess.

One-Eyed Jacks

After pulling a bank heist in Mexico, the outlaw Rio (Marlon Brando) and his partner, Dad Longworth (Karl Malden), make a run for it, but Dad has bigger plans than freedom. He betrays Rio and absconds with the loot, and Rio ends up in prison. Years pass before Rio finally breaks free to enact his long-plotted revenge. Tracking Dad to California, Rio learns he's become a sheriff -- which is no deterrent -- but when Rio falls for Dad's stepdaughter, Louisa (Pina Pellicer), he has second thoughts.

Badman's Territory

After Jesse and Frank James rob a bank in a northern Texas country, Sheriff Mark Rowley (Randolph Scott) and his deputy brother Johnny (James Warren) pursue them into the "Badlands" territory, an outlaw haven not associated with any government. The James brothers are also wanted by a devious federal marshal, who battles Mark for their custody. Soon Mark and Johnny are embroiled with the Dalton Gang and an effort by a female newspaper owner (Ann Richards) to make the territory part of Oklahoma.

Returning to Fort Lincoln, Capt. Benson learns of Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn. At the inquiry as Custer's officers blame Custer for the defeat, Benson tries to defend him. However, Benson was suspiciously absent at the time of the battle and is now despised by the troops. So when an order to retrieve the bodies from the battlefield arrives, Benson volunteers for the dangerous mission of returning back into Indian territory.

The Bushwhackers

After four years of bloodshed, the Civil War finally ends. Discarding his weapons, Southern soldier Jefferson Waring (John Ireland) dedicates himself to the cause of pacifism. Waring relocates to a quiet frontier town in Missouri, where he hears news of profiteer Artemus Taylor (Lon Chaney) and a campaign of intimidation against local property holders. When several of his neighbors are killed by Taylor's gang, the newly nonviolent Waring struggles to determine the right thing to do.
