Texas Marshal Howard Nightingale (Kirk Douglas) aspires to become a U.S. senator and believes that to do so, he must capture the gunslinger Jack Strawhorn (Bruce Dern). Young Billy Young
Fleeing the scene of a gruesome gunfight in Mexico, Billy Young (Robert Walker) arrives in the small town of Lordsburg, where he is promptly deputized by local sheriff Ben Kane (Robert Mitchum).
