The Sand Pebbles
In 1926, the USS San Pablo patrols the Yangtze River during the clashes between Chiang Kai-shek's communists and Chinese warlords. Eight-year veteran machinist Jake Holman (Steve McQueen), new to the self-named sand pebbles crew, immediately draws deep suspicion due to his independent streak. Ordered to protect Americans, including schoolteacher Shirley Eckhart (Candice Bergen), Jake and the gunboat crew are unwittingly drawn into a bitter nationalistic feud that holds grim consequences.
Heaven With a Barbed Wire Fence
Joe (Glenn Ford), a clerk in New York City, hits the road to claim the land he bought in Arizona. But having spent all of his savings on the land, he must hitchhike. He meets a drifter named Tony (Nicholas Conte) and then Spanish refugee Anita (Jean Rogers). Together the three run into the "Professor" (Raymond Walburn), an erudite hobo. The quartet travel across the country, getting into scrapes, avoiding the police and encountering others hit hard by the Great Depression.

Kitty loses the baby and is told the injuries from the accident may prevent her from conceiving again. On the advice of friends Walter (David Wayne) and Janet Pringle (Jane Wyatt), the couple decides to adopt, but their show business background makes orphanage director Mrs. Johnston (Laura Pierpont) wary. Desperate, Kitty and Jack turn to the black market for a baby.
