Rain
In the South Pacific, the passengers of a boat must disembark prematurely at the island of Pago Pago due to a cholera scare. Among them are missionaries Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston) and his wife (Beulah Bondi), and a spirited prostitute, Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford). On the island, Thompson lives it up with the American soldiers stationed in the village, and captures the heart of Sgt. Tim O'Hara (William Gargan). But Thompson's wild ways are too much for Davidson, who tries to convert her.

Nick Rocco (Richard Conte) and his wife, Emily (Judy Holliday), are a happily married couple expecting their first child. But their home in Los Angeles is full of problems that Nick, who is a struggling writer, is too poor to fix. Emily convinces him to ask his father (Salvatore Baccaloni), an Italian immigrant and stonemason, to help with repairs in the house. However, father and son have longstanding grudges over Nick's refusal to attend church, and the men must confront their differences.

On a cruise ship headed to Havana, librarian Lulu Smith (Barbara Stanwyck) meets dashing attorney Bob Grover (Adolphe Menjou), and they quickly become inseparable.
