Mitch harbors a secret love for Kyle's unsatisfied wife, Lucy (Lauren Bacall) -- a fact that leaves him exposed when the jealous Marylee accuses him of murder.

Song-and-dance men Steve Carroll (Dennis Morgan) and Danny Foster (Jack Carson) walk to a Texas dude ranch after their car runs out of gas. Though Svengali gets the golden-voiced Trilby to fake her death, and then brings her on a tour of Europe, Billee uncovers the deception and sets out to wrest her from Svengali's clutches.
