On a cruise ship headed to Havana, librarian Lulu Smith (Barbara Stanwyck) meets dashing attorney Bob Grover (Adolphe Menjou), and they quickly become inseparable. When they return home, their relationship is complicated by an inconvenient fact: Bob is married and unwilling to leave his bedridden wife. Their relationship dissolves, and Lulu decides not to tell him that she's pregnant with his child. But, when Bob becomes district attorney, a nosy reporter may uncover the explosive news anyway.

Noble cowboy the Durango Kid (Charles Starrett) gets snared in a vicious feud between two warring stagecoach operations. One of the two has been recently willed to spitfire Mary Halliday (Carole Mathews), whose father the Kid suspects was murdered by a business rival. A reporter writes a fictitious column about a man named John Doe, who claims to despair at America's neglect of the little people and plans to kill himself. To maintain the ruse, the newspaper hires a ballplayer-turned-hobo to pose as John Doe.

The Scarlet Pimpernel

At the heart of the French Revolution, effete aristocrat Sir Percy Blakeney (Leslie Howard) is secretly the Scarlet Pimpernel, leading an underground group dedicated to freeing nobles from the brutal Robespierre. Blakeney plays his part so well that even his own wife, Marguerite (Merle Oberon), doesn't suspect him. Robespierre's agent, Chauvelin (Raymond Massey), learns that Marguerite's brother is one of the Pimpernel's group, and she begins working unknowingly to destroy her own husband.
