Journeying from Mexico back home to West Texas, mercenary Tom Buchanan (Randolph Scott) takes a break for the night in the border town of Agry. He soon discovers that almost every resident -- from the crooked sheriff (Barry Kelley) to the shifty-eyed innkeeper -- is a member of the prominent Agry family. When Buchanan defends Juan de la Vega (Manuel Rojas), a young man about to be lynched for shooting the town drunk, he himself is accused of murder and must struggle to escape town alive.

Strobie's natural son, Lee (Robert Walker), is jealous of Owen and finally finds a way to undermine his upstanding brother. When Lee conceives an illegitimate child with Lily Fasken (Sally Forrest), who refuses to name him as the father, he tells her revenge-minded brothers that Owen is to blame, hoping they'll take his half-brother out of the picture.

Meet John Doe

A reporter writes a fictitious column about a man named "John Doe," who claims to despair at America's neglect of the little people and plans to kill himself. The newspaper then hires a ballplayer-turned-hobo to pose as John Doe. In a series of radio addresses written by a publisher with fascist leanings, Doe captures the public's imagination. When he finally realizes he has been used, Doe comes to his senses and becomes the man he never knew he could be.

Madeleine Smith (Ann Todd), the beautiful eldest daughter of a wealthy Glasgow family, begins an illicit love affair with the charming Emile (Ivan Desny), a working-class Frenchman. When she begins to suspect that Emile loves her only for her money and social status, Madeleine agrees to marry the man her iron-fisted father (Leslie Banks) approves of, wealthy and respectable William Minnoch (Norman Wooland). When Emile dies suddenly, suspicion points to Madeleine as his murderer.

Kansas Pacific

With the American Civil War looming, construction of the Pacific railroad is being held up in Kansas, sabotaged by Confederate sympathizers. The government dispatches an Army engineer, John Nelson (Sterling Hayden), to oversee construction, and he initially rubs the wrong way both his proud boss (Barton MacLane) and his boss's feisty daughter (Eve Miller). Eventually, though, both fall for Nelson's charms, and the hero seeks to uncover the Southern rat so he can lead the Union men due west.
