They Were Expendable
After a demonstration of new PT boats, navy brass are still unconvinced of their viability in combat, leaving Lt. "Rusty" Ryan (John Wayne) frustrated. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, however, Ryan and his buddy Lt. Brickley (Robert Montgomery) are told they can finally take their squadron into battle. The PT boats quickly prove their worth, successfully shooting down Japanese planes, relaying messages between islands, and picking off a multitude of enemy ships.

Editor Mark Chapman (Broderick Crawford) presides over a trashy but financially successful tabloid newspaper in New York City. With his hotshot crime reporter, Steve McCleary (John Derek), and feature writer, Julie Allison (Donna Reed), Chapman attends a Lonely Hearts Club publicity stunt sponsored by the paper, where he's shocked to run into Charlotte (Rosemary DeCamp), the wife he abandoned two decades before. Their argument takes a violent turn that might ruin everything Chapman has.

Dare Rudd (John Wayne) and Dinkey (Syd Saylor) are two friends who love to gamble. Needing money and shelter, they travel to Montana to visit Rudd's cousin, Tom (John Mack Brown), who owns a successful cattle ranch. Dare quickly falls for Tom's girlfriend Judy (Marsha Hunt), who convinces Tom to give Dare a chance to prove himself by running a cattle drive. When he loses the herd in a high-stakes poker game, Dare joins forces with Tom and Dinkey to get the cattle back.
