Yorkshire coal miner Frank Machin (Richard Harris) picks a fight in a club and subsequently finds himself being recruited for a rugby team. He's an unpolished player, but his aggressiveness, brutality and indifference to the rules of fair play impress the team owners. Suddenly a rising star, Frank despairs that his success on the playing field isn't equaled in his personal life. He loves a widowed, emotionally challenged landlady (Rachel Roberts) who's too damaged to return his feelings.
The Passionate Friends
In this drama, based on the H.G. Wells novel, Mary (Ann Todd) longs for Steven (Trevor Howard), a lover she turned down years ago. Later, Mary is married to Howard (Claude Rains), but meets up with Steven while on vacation in the Swiss Alps. A seemingly platonic encounter fueled by pent-up passion leads to an affair between Mary and Steven, and she must choose between the two men -- the husband who loves her and the now-married man she rejected years earlier.

Stuart Heisler's film is set during the 20s Oklahoma oil boom. Cherokee Lansing, daughter of a rancher killed by the oilmen, is determined to get her revenge by finding oil before they can. Helped by native American Jim Redbird and roustabout Brad Brady she strikes it rich, but her greed sees her and oilman Bruce Tanner become partners.
Alvarez Kelly
Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) is a Mexican cattle rancher who is doing his best to stay out of the Civil War. He has no interest in which side may win or lose -- Kelly is far more concerned about his own survival, and about making money. He soon finds himself in the middle of the conflict, however, when a confederate colonel (Richard Widmark) captures the rancher and forces Kelly to help his soldiers steal a nearby herd of cattle, which they desperately need for food.
Gilda
Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) is a small-time American gambler, newly arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina. When he is caught cheating at a game of blackjack, Farrell manages to talk his way into a job with the casino's owner, the powerful Ballin Mundson (George Macready). The two form an uneasy partnership based off their mutual lack of scruples until Mundson introduces Farrell to his beautiful new wife, Gilda (Rita Hayworth), who just happens to be Farrell's ex-lover.
The Mob
After witnessing what appears to be a police officer shooting a man in cold blood, detective Johnny Damico (Broderick Crawford) decides to go undercover. Tracing the murder victim to a waterfront crime ring, Damico poses as longshoreman Tim Flynn, and infiltrates the corrupt New York dockworkers union. There he meets union toughs Joe Castro (Ernest Borgnine) and Gunner (Neville Brand), who eventually lead him to crime kingpin Blackie Clegg (Matt Crowley).
