Wagon Master
When a group of Mormons are run out of town for their religious beliefs, Elder Wiggs (Ward Bond) searches for a wagon master to guide the outcasts to the San Juan Valley. Happening upon horse traders Travis Blue (Ben Johnson) and Sandy (Harry Carey Jr.), Wiggs convinces the men to take the position due to their intimate knowledge of the area. Despite Blue and Sandy's guidance, the travelers experience numerous setbacks, especially when the Clegg family outlaws take refuge in their wagon train.
Face of a Fugitive
While being escorted to jail, bank robber Jim Larson (Fred MacMurray) manages to get the upper hand on his captor and escape. Jim is surprised to see his brother appear on the scene, ready to aid his sibling. As they make their getaway, his brother and the pursuing lawman shoot each other, leaving the stunned Jim alone and on the run. Assuming a different identity, Jim travels to a mining town and befriends the local sheriff (Lin McCarthy), hoping to start over and find redemption.
Mr. Soft Touch
A World War II veteran, Joe Miracle (Glenn Ford), comes home to find that his nightclub has been taken over by gangsters and his business partner has been killed. After reclaiming the money that is rightfully his, he is forced to hide out in a settlement house due to a case of mistaken identity. There, he befriends the house manager, Jenny Jones (Evelyn Keyes). While being pursued by gangsters and a persistent journalist, Joe learns a valuable lesson about altruism.
In a Lonely Place
Hollywood screenwriter Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart) and his neighbor Laurel (Gloria Grahame) are just getting to know each other romantically when the police begin questioning Dixon about his involvement in the murder of a girl he met once. Certain her new love interest is innocent, Laurel stands by Dixon, but as the police continue pressing him, Dixon begins to act increasingly erratically. The blossoming love affair suffers as Laurel begins to wonder if Dixon really might be a killer.
Human Desire
When he's fired from his job at the railroad, Carl Buckley (Broderick Crawford) asks his wife, Vicki (Gloria Grahame), to pay a visit to his boss, Owens (Grandon Rhodes), to try to earn his sympathies. It works, but Carl then assumes that Vicki and Owens are involved romantically, so he murders his boss in a jealous rage. Sick of her husband's violent ways, Vicki seduces Jeff (Glenn Ford), another worker at the railroad, hoping that she can convince him to murder her husband.
Winterset
Based on a play that fictionalized the sensational Sacco and Vanzetti trial, this film follows Mio Romagna (Burgess Meredith), a young man who's certain that his father, Bartolomeo (John Carradine), was executed as the result of a wrongful murder conviction. More than a decade after the crime, Mio, piggybacking on the work of enterprising journalists, pursues the case's key figures, reconstructing a web of lies based on greed, incompetence and bigotry against immigrants.
