According to Ana's friends, she wanted to leave her husband. But she felt that she couldn't because divorce is discouraged in Filipino culture. Also, if she had divorced him, she could be deported, leaving her daughter with Ali.

Friends of both victims gave the jury context as to what was actually going on in the home of Ali and Ana Abulaban. She chose to separate. But in the end, Ana would be shot to death and Ali was accused of her murder.
