According to Carly Gregg's therapist, Carly Gregg wasn't in an extreme agitated state in the weeks and months leading to the death of Ashley Smylie, her mother. Rebecca Kirk, a licensed mental health counselor told jurors that the defendant was treated for anxiety and sleeping problems. But, Kirk also reported that Gregg was cutting herself, talking about atheism, and having depressed thought. These were in therapy sessions just weeks before she shot her mother, Ashley Smylie, in her bedroom.

A forensic psychologist working for the state of Mississippi took the stand. Prosecutors brought in this mental health expert to dismiss the defense's assertion that the defendant killed her own mom, Ashley Smylie, due to an untreated mental illness. Dr. Amanda Gugliano was the director of forensic evaluation services at the Mississippi State Hospital. She spent several hours evaluating the defendant after she was arrested.

Prosecutors also alleged that after the victim was shot, Carly Gregg invited a friend to come over to see the body. The defendant was also accused of admitting to that friend that she had killed her and was waiting for her stepfather to come home so she could try to kill him too.

The crime scene investigator faced questions from the defense. Investigator Tyler Burnell had processed the area where Ashley Smylie lost her life. He told jurors that once Carly Gregg was taken into custody, she was brought back to the crime scene. At that time, police had to wait on a judge's order as to where this then-14-year-old would be booked. Either in a juvenile facility or an adult jail.

The jury watched surveillance video from inside her home in the lead-up and the aftermath of Ashley Smylie's murder. According to police, it took several searches to retrieve the footage that shows what the defendant did after killing her mom and allegedly lying in wait to try to kill her stepdad. Next, the lead investigator on the stand told jurors that Smylie had been shot in the head in her daughter's bedroom. Evidence found included blood spatter on a TV and a bullet hole in the wall.

Jurors shifted their attention to the forensic science in this case. On the stand was a trace evidence examiner who found gunshot residue on both of Carly Gregg's hands in the hours after police say she shot and killed her mother, Ashley Smylie. Next to the witness stand was a DNA analyst. Prosecutors claimed they were able to link the defendant's DNA to the trigger on the gun used to shoot her mother. Later, the state formally rested their case to the jury.

Jurors learned of the complex relationship Carly Gregg had with him before all this happened.
