According to the college dean on the stand, within a week before the murder, University of Mount Union officials forced the defendant to leave the school. When it was time for Brenda Powell to reach out to her daughter's school administrators about her expulsion, the State contended she was attacked by Sydney and stabbed to death. Next to the stand was the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy on the victim. Dr. Robert Schott went into graphic detail for jurors.

Thirty stab wounds in her neck was what the forensic pathologist confirmed about the attack on Brenda Powell. Dr. Robert Schott did the autopsy in this case and described for the jury how she died. Jurors saw the crime scene photos, as part of the state's case. When police arrived at the scene where Brenda was stabbed, they say they found Sydney in the driveway with her eyes rolled back and clawing at the asphalt. Her defense claimed she in a catatonic state not responding to audio stimuli.

According to police officers on the scene, the defendant told them that an intruder had broken in and that her mom was bleeding. But investigators later found out that that claim wasn't exactly true. On the stand was an investigator who worked the gory scene at the Powell family home. He presented the jury with a number of bloody crime scene photos. The State claimed Sydney confronted and cornered her mother in her bedroom and fatally attacked her with an iron skillet and a kitchen knife.

The crime scene was staged. That's what prosecutors said about the fatal attack on Brenda Powell. Investigators came across blood found in different areas of the home. They said it looked like it was made to appear that an intruder had broken in and killed her. Jurors listened to more detailed testimony from Lieutenant David Whiddon, the lead investigator on the case. The defendant pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity claiming she had a psychotic break during the attack.

The Defense had questions for the lead investigator who looked deeper into Sydney Powell's background. Jurors were given the timeline of events leading up to the murder of her mother, Brenda. The lead investigator in the case was testifying. Lieutenant David Whiddon was portraying a story of a student who flunked out of college and then attacked her mother when she found out.

Prosecutors rested their case. Now it was up to the Defense to try to convince the jury that mental illness caused her to attack her mother, Brenda Powell. The Defense's first witness was the defendant's grandmother, who was also the victim's mother. Jurors heard more about the medication Sydney Powell was taking. This was all during her grandmother's testimony where she shared details about family life over the years.

The first mental health expert took the stand. According to Dr. James Reardon who evaluated Sydney Powell, she had the early signs of schizophrenia. He added that as a result of this severe mental health issue, she could not appreciate that what she was doing was wrong. Defendant pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity claiming she had a psychotic break during the attack.

According to the defense's mental health expert Sydney Powell was out of touch with reality at the time she murdered her mother. This went against the state's case where prosecutors claimed there was no evidence of a mental health issue when she fatally attacked Brenda Powell. Jurors learned more about what she was allegedly going through, mentally, in the lead up to the fatal stabbing. The Defense wanted the jury to hear from the expert on the stand, a forensic psychologist.

Jurors heard more testimony about how frantic Karen Read seemed to be at the scene where her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, was found. Kerry Roberts was one of the friends who was with her. She wrapped up her testimony for the State. Next, a friend who vacationed with O'Keefe a month before he died took the stand. Laura Sullivan formed a close friendship with the victim, so much so, that he became her son's godfather.

The jury listened to details about a trip to Aruba that happened a few weeks before John O'Keefe was killed. On this trip was the defendant and the victim, along with a number of family and friends. Two sisters who vacationed with Karen Read and her boyfriend. Prosecutors wanted to present evidence that the couple's relationship was rocky in the weeks leading up to his death. The State claimed this was part of the motive for Read to kill him.

Testimony took jurors back to the bar where Karen Read and her boyfriend, John O'Keefe were hanging out hours before he was killed. He would be found in the snow on the lawn of a retired Boston police sergeant. On the stand was ATF Special Agent Brian Higgins. He would later admit to jurors that he sent flirty texts to the defendant while she was with O'Keefe. Prosecutors hoped this would show that they had a rocky relationship before he died and help prove their theory of what happened.

An ATF special agent testified for the State. But he wasn't there because of his job. He was telling jurors about his connection to the defendant and the victim, John O'Keefe. The state brought in texts between read Higgins to try to show that there were issues in her relationship with John O'Keefe. This was key to the prosecution's case which alleged she killed him because things between them were strained.
