This was the criteria used in the Defense's case for insanity. Lorena claimed temporary insanity at the moment of the attack.

Her defense alleged that acute psychosis drove her to mutilate her husband. But the state claimed the very target of her cutting was in itself a goal-oriented, reasoned action.
