Carly Gregg's defense team had questions for the first officer who arrived at her home after her mother, Ashley Smylie was killed. By the time police got there, the defendant had run away but was later caught and taken into custody. Next to the stand was the defendant's stepfather and the victim's husband, Heath Smylie. Prosecutors alleged Gregg also wanted to have her stepfather killed but her defense alleged she slipped into a manic, mental health crisis.

Jurors learned more about the defendant's background which included secrets she kept from her parents. On the stand was Carly Gregg's stepfather, Heath Smylie, who was the other victim in the case. He told jurors about finding Ashley's body and then Carly shooting at him. Gregg was 14 years old at the time she killed her mother and wounded her stepfather. Prosecutors tried her as an adult in the crimes.

A forensic scientist on the stand had more to tell the jury about crime scene evidence. One part of that was the clothing John O'Keefe had been wearing. Maureen Hartnett examined it as thoroughly as the hair and dents found on the outside of the defendant's car. The cross-examination began on Hartnett. She was among the team who examined, collected, and processed crime scene evidence.

Maureen Hartnett, the crime scene analyst working this case, got grilled by Karen Read's defense under cross-examination. Hartnett testified that she did not know when the pieces of glass or the hair got on the defendant's SUV. Her lawyers maintained throughout this trial that she was framed by someone who fatally beat John O'Keefe inside a home and that the homeowner's relationship with local and state police tainted this investigation.

The Defense grilled the man who she was flirting with in text messages. The jury was shown these texts between Karen Read and Brian Higgins weeks before John O'Keefe was killed. Higgins denied that claim but admitted he was attracted to the defendant.

The jury listened to what Brian Higgins was doing in the hours before John O'Keefe died. Prosecutors contended that Karen Read was flirting with him in text messages in the days leading up to her boyfriend's death. But those texts suddenly stopped after he died. Brian Higgins admitted to jurors that he was a bit embarrassed by his texts to Karen read. He claimed John O'Keefe was his friend and that texting with her was not a good look.

Everybody was in shock the day John O'Keefe died according to Brian Higgins, who was under cross examination. He said he remembered how upsetting that day was, which made his memory a bit fuzzy. Higgins recalled that Karen Read and her boyfriend never showed up to the house party after they told friends gathered at a local bar that they would. Read's defense was convinced that John O'Keefe was beaten up by men at the Albert family home and then dumped in the snow.

Karen Read's attorney accused a State witness of changing his statements to law enforcement. Brian Higgins was a friend of both the defendant and John O'Keefe. He was hanging out with them at a bar just hours before O'Keefe died. The Defense grilled Higgins for removing the SIM card from his cell phone and getting rid of it. They asked him what exactly did he do with his phone weeks after John O'Keefe was pronounced dead.

An ATF special agent admitted that he got rid of cell phone records of the texts he made in the weeks and even hours leading up to the death of John O'Keefe. The long testimony of Brian Higgins wrapped up. He told the jury about his friendship with Karen Read and John O'Keefe, his access to the Canton Police Department, the flirty texts he exchanged with the defendant and how he got rid of the SIM card from his phone.

The doctor who pronounced John O'Keefe dead at the hospital testified. Emergency room physician, Dr. Justin Rice, told jurors how John O'Keefe lost his life in a blizzard. He claimed that O'Keefe did not have a pulse when he got to the ER and was completely unresponsive. When O'Keefe was rushed to a nearby hospital he was declared deceased. His cause of death was blunt force trauma and hypothermia.

The long testimony of the defense's mental health expert was not over yet. Dr. James Reardon testified that the most compelling evidence of the Sydney Powell's mental state was the attack itself. It took three and half minutes. He said the spontaneity, brutality and lack of motive were all factors that suggested Powell was in the throes of a psychotic break.

The State quizzed the defense's mental health expert over the lead-up to and murder of Brenda Powell, the defendant's mother. Dr. James Reardon tried to explain why Sydney attempted to manipulate the crime scene before police arrived. This forensic psychologist did not waver on his opinion during cross-examination. Dr. Reardon argued that Sydney Powell was suffering from schizophrenia and went into a psychotic break weeks before Brenda, her mother, was killed.
