Corrupt Wisconsin lumberman Jim Fallon (Kirk Douglas) travels to Northern California at the dawn of the 20th century in order to gain control of a tract of redwood forest. Fallon's underhanded tactics stir resentment from everyone, including settler Elder Bixby (Charles Meredith) ; his beautiful daughter, Alicia (Eve Miller) ; Fallon's fair-minded employee, Yukon Burns (Edgar Buchanan) ; and his right-hand man, Frenchy LeCroix (John Archer) -- and his cheating ways create unlikely bedfellows.

Fresh out of college, American Rod Drew (John Wayne) is asked to assist in the search for missing people in Canada. When the bandits abduct the young Felice Newsome (Verna Hillie), it becomes apparent they're responsible for the other disappearances as well. The discovery of an invasive insect species threatens his logging business, so Bill Wright (Damian O'Flynn) murders a forest ranger to keep him from reporting his findings. Local hunter Gene Autry (Gene Autry), who had been nearby, shooting at a mountain lion, thinks he may have been responsible for the ranger's death and takes over his job out of a sense of duty to the man's daughter (Patricia White). Gene and his sidekick, Joe Lucas (Jimmy Lloyd), battle Wright and his men to save the forest.

Horse trader Roy Rogers has plans to breed his prize mare with legendary stallion Golden Sovereign. Unfortunately, scheming nightclub owner Brett Scoville (Jack Holt) has his eye on the same stud and steals the horse. Sovereign breaks free, however, and mates with Rogers's mare, eventually producing a spirited colt that Rogers names Trigger. When Sovereign is accidentally killed, Rogers is blamed for the crime, and he and Trigger must escape the law and track down the real killer.

Wrongly imprisoned for murder, John Brant (John Wayne) decides his only option is to escape from jail and clear his name by finding the true killer. After breaking out, he ends up on the run from Sheriff Parker (Bob Burns) and catches the attention of outlaw Bob Jones (Lane Chandler), who offers to let Brant into his gang. Needing all the help he can get, Brant agrees, but running with these bandits only gets him deeper into trouble -- while the real killer remains on the loose.

When the emergence of the telegraph makes their jobs as Pony Express riders obsolete, cowboys John Blair (John Wayne) and Larry Adams (Lane Chandler) hastily purchase a stagecoach line operating out of Crescent City, Calif., unaware that the place is essentially a ghost town. The congenial mayor, Rocky (Lew Kelly), convinces John to compete in a horse race against Drake (Douglas Cosgrove), the man who sold them the bum deal, for a coveted government contract in postal delivery.

John Mason (John Wayne) suffers a cruel homecoming when he witnesses his father's murder as he rides into town. Incensed, he chases after the killers, but he suffers a gunshot wound that cuts his pursuit short. Alice Gordon (Marion Burns) sees to his injury, and Mason is taken by her kindness and beauty. But things turn sour when her beau, Ben (Reed Howes), becomes jealous. After Mason discovers the men who killed his father, his plan for a duel is sabotaged by Ben, who has been manipulated.
Randy Rides Alone
Undercover government agent Randy Bowers (John Wayne) rides into a small town, happening upon a saloon that's just been shot up. Wary of the newcomer, the sheriff (Earle Dwire) arrests Randy for the murders, but the saloon owner's niece, Sally Rogers (Alberta Vaughn), helps him escape because she knows he didn't do it. Randy then sets out to find the man behind the murders and is led to an evil mastermind named Marvin Black (George Hayes), who has been passing himself off as an innocent mute.
