John Mason (John Wayne) suffers a cruel homecoming when he witnesses his father's murder as he rides into town. Incensed, he chases after the killers, but he suffers a gunshot wound that cuts his pursuit short. Alice Gordon (Marion Burns) sees to his injury, and Mason is taken by her kindness and beauty. But things turn sour when her beau, Ben (Reed Howes), becomes jealous. After Mason discovers the men who killed his father, his plan for a duel is sabotaged by Ben, who has been manipulated.

Reid, who was injured in the attack, slowly recovers with the help of his childhood friend, the Native American Tonto (Michael Horse). Afterward, Reid dons a mask, calls himself the Lone Ranger and begins fighting evil with Tonto.

Newlywed Benjamin Taber (Travis Tritt) is in town with his bride when a bank robbery goes awry and she disappears in a chaotic shootout. As they follow the group's trail, they receive help from several unlikely sources, including Flora Mae Pepper (Naomi Judd), the owner of a brothel that doubles as a safe haven.

John rescues them and catches Zanti, only to face criminal charges from lawman Sheriff Williams (Jack Rockwell). Zanti is let go, and John must clear his name and establish who the real criminal is.
