Famed outlaw Harry Tracy (Bruce Dern) is known for his daring train robberies, but lately he's concentrating more on matters of the heart. That's why he's traveling to Oregon to reunite with his sweetheart, Catherine Tuttle (Helen Shaver). She's the daughter of a judge, and it's no surprise that, when Tracy gets to Portland, he winds up behind bars. But no jail built can hold the desperado, and, after breaking out, Tracy finds himself on the run from every lawman in the state.

An alcoholic philosophizer (Thomas Mitchell), a lady of ill repute (Claire Trevor) and a timid liquor salesman (Donald Meek) are among the motley crew of travelers who must contend with an escaped outlaw, the Ringo Kid (John Wayne), and the ever-present threat of an Apache attack as they make their way across the Wild West.

The discovery of an invasive insect species threatens his logging business, so Bill Wright (Damian O'Flynn) murders a forest ranger to keep him from reporting his findings. Local hunter Gene Autry (Gene Autry), who had been nearby, shooting at a mountain lion, thinks he may have been responsible for the ranger's death and takes over his job out of a sense of duty to the man's daughter (Patricia White). Gene and his sidekick, Joe Lucas (Jimmy Lloyd), battle Wright and his men to save the forest.
