Corrupt Wisconsin lumberman Jim Fallon (Kirk Douglas) travels to Northern California at the dawn of the 20th century in order to gain control of a tract of redwood forest. Fallon's underhanded tactics stir resentment from everyone, including settler Elder Bixby (Charles Meredith) ; his beautiful daughter, Alicia (Eve Miller) ; Fallon's fair-minded employee, Yukon Burns (Edgar Buchanan) ; and his right-hand man, Frenchy LeCroix (John Archer) -- and his cheating ways create unlikely bedfellows.

Undercover federal marshal John Carruthers (John Wayne) is suspected by the local sheriff, Jake (George Hayes), of stealing the town's payroll, but his suspicions are sidelined when young Betty Mason (Eleanor Hunt) announces that her father, an important businessman, has been murdered. Without him, supplies will not reach town, and homesteaders will starve. Gabby Whittaker (George "Gabby" Hayes) runs the Half-a-Chance Ranch for boys from troubled homes. At the boys' graduation, Gabby's friend Roy Rogers (Roy Rogers) performs. Roy later grows concerned when one of the boys, Chip (Tommy Cook), receives a visit from his outlaw father, King Blaine (Lyle Talbot). Chased away by the sheriff, Blaine is shot and killed, leaving Chip a pawn between Blaine's gang and Roy -- who knows Blaine left the take from his last robbery with his son.
Springtime in the Rockies
Just out of animal husbandry school, Sandra Knight (Polly Rowles) boldly decides to make changes on the ranch she has just inherited, and to raise sheep instead of cattle. Experienced foreman Gene Autry (Gene Autry) tries to warn her against this hasty conversion, but Sandra stubbornly ignores his advice. Before long, her business is failing, and she may be forced to sell to the shifty Briggs (Al Bridge). However, Gene has a plan that he hopes can set things right just in time.

Aging rancher George Washington McLintock (John Wayne), a wealthy self-made man, is forced to deal with numerous personal and professional problems.
