A successful advertising executive, David Basner (Tom Hanks), is working on a project that could make him partner at his company. When his parents suddenly end their 36-year marriage, he is thrown into the role of caregiver, dealing with his delicate mother, Lorraine (Eva Marie Saint), and his combative father, Max (Jackie Gleason), who provides constant aggravation and bitter remarks. Fearing it would compromise his career, lawyer Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) hides his homosexuality and HIV status at a powerful Philadelphia law firm. But his secret is exposed when a colleague spots the illness's telltale lesions. Fired shortly afterwards, Beckett resolves to sue for discrimination, teaming up with Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), the only lawyer willing to help. In court, they face one of his ex-employer's top litigators, Belinda Conine (Mary Steenburgen).

Mac Traven (Tom Selleck) is a Civil War veteran who fought for the North, while his brother, Dal (Sam Elliott), was allied with the South. In spite of this considerable point of contention, the siblings must work together when they find that other family members have been abducted, along with Dal's girlfriend, Kate (Katharine Ross). Joined by their trouble-making uncle "Black Jack" (Ben Johnson), Mac and Dal relentlessly pursue the criminals to rescue their relatives.
The Incredible Journey of Doctor Meg Laurel
Meg Laurel (Lindsay Wagner) is a young woman from the Appalachian Mountains who leaves her hometown in the 1930s to become a doctor in Boston. She decides to return home and practice medicine in the rural community where she grew up, partly because of a bad experience she had as a girl with a local healer. Things don't go as planned, however, as she faces stiff resistance from the residents and clashes with "medicine woman" Granny Arrowroot (Jane Wyman).
