Major Movie Star
Popular actress Megan Valentine (Jessica Simpson) is down on her luck: Her scheming accountant made off with her fortune, and her latest film flopped. She hopes to sign onto a major military-theme production but, first, must change her ditzy image to impress the studio making the movie. In order to prove herself, Megan enters the Marines and is sent to boot camp, where she butts heads with gruff Sgt. Louisa Morely (Vivica A. Fox) and struggles to adapt to life without luxury.

A nerdy teen, Ryan Woodman (Shane West) is smitten with the popular and gorgeous Ashley Grant (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), who apparently has no interest in him. Nervous Irish Mafia hit man Daniel (Harry Connick Jr.), who's been gunning for Dick, arrives shortly afterward and admits he has never successfully completed a job. Daniel proposes to take credit for the murder, and the odd couple fall in love.

Murphy's Romance
Emma (Sally Field), a divorced single mother seeking to start her life over, moves to a small town in Arizona. She builds a relationship with Murphy (James Garner), the older local pharmacist but, due to his age, it remains platonic. Karate master Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) goes to Boston to attend a military reunion. There, he visits with Louisa (Constance Towers), the widow of his former commander, and meets her granddaughter, Julie (Hilary Swank). Julie's parents were recently killed in a car accident, and she is still reeling from the loss. When Julie surprises Miyagi with her knowledge of karate, he takes her to a Buddhist monastery for training and to help her come to terms with her angst.
