Meg Laurel (Lindsay Wagner) is a young woman from the Appalachian Mountains who leaves her hometown in the 1930s to become a doctor in Boston. She decides to return home and practice medicine in the rural community where she grew up, partly because of a bad experience she had as a girl with a local healer. Things don't go as planned, however, as she faces stiff resistance from the residents and clashes with "medicine woman" Granny Arrowroot (Jane Wyman).
Emma's Chance

Every Wednesday, Emily sets up a booth in her backyard that regularly attracts the guilty young souls of the neighborhood. These include Philip (Michael Angarano), whose clumsiness and his interest in Emily make him a challenging client. But complications ensue when she suddenly finds it difficult to keep all of her neighbors' secrets to herself.

Along the way, they're also introduced to Uncle Louie (Richard Dreyfuss), a small-time crook. Underlying tension between Bella and her mother surface when Bella decides to marry her boyfriend, Johnny (David Strathairn).
