Set in the Caribbean, U.S. expatriates Tony (Jack Lemmon) and Felix (Robert Mitchum) cruise around the ocean and eke out a meager subsistence using their small trawling boat to transport cargo. When they take on the job of smuggling illegal-immigrant beauty Irena (Rita Hayworth) to another island, the two friends find their friendship torn apart by their mutual romantic feelings toward her. Though jealousy has split them apart, fate intervenes to bring the two back together.

Advertising executive William Weldon (Franchot Tone) narrowly averts career implosion when his clever wife, Margaret (Lucille Ball), helps him save an important advertising account. In the 14th century, famous writer Giovanni Boccaccio (Louis Jourdan) returns to Florence, Italy, to woo beautiful noblewoman Fiametta (Joan Fontaine). Although Fiametta rejects Giovanni's attentions, he wins an audience by promising to tell her an original story. Relating a lively tale of a Spanish pirate, Giovanni then spins numerous other tales that Fiametta criticizes as mockery. After Giovanni challenges her to respond in kind, the pair flirts, trying to outdo each other in tall tales.

Upon being diagnosed with terminal cancer, selfless suburban housewife Mary Scott (Margaret Sullavan) makes the ultimate sacrifice: she decides to keep the unpleasant news from her husband, Brad (Wendell Corey), and daughter, Polly, to avoid devastating her loved ones. Instead, Mary encourages Brad's affair with a co-worker (Viveca Lindfors), and even grooms the other woman to take her place. But as Mary's illness progresses, keeping it a secret presents a considerable challenge.
The Swimmer
Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town. Soon, Ned's journey becomes harrowing; at each house, he is somehow confronted with a reminder of his romantic, domestic and economic failures, until a final visit with an old flame (Janice Rule) leaves him devastated.

Aspiring artist Christina James (Jean Seberg) leaves the safety of her family and the simplicity of Midwestern America to study painting in Paris and finds herself on a bittersweet journey of self-discovery. As if her love life weren't complicated enough, the ennui she faces as a result of her romantic indecision makes daily life all the more complex. When her father (Addison Powell) travels to Paris and offers to bring her home, the consequences of her decisions may haunt the rest of her life.
