Theodora Lynn (Irene Dunne) is secretly the author of a salacious novel written under a pen name. She must hide her identity from the residents of her small, conservative Connecticut town, who disapprove of the book. When Theodora goes to New York to visit her publisher (Thurston Hall), she meets the book's cover artist, Michael Grant (Melvyn Douglas), who tries to convince her to reveal herself as the real author. When Theodora falls for Michael, she soon finds that he has secrets of his own.

When hard-charging New York newspaper editor Walter Burns discovers that his ex-wife, investigative reporter Hildy Johnson, has gotten engaged to milquetoast insurance agent Bruce Baldwin, he unsuccessfully tries to lure her away from tame domestic life with a story about the impending execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams. The life of Prince Hamlet of Denmark (Nicol Williamson) is thrown into disarray when he learns that his father was murdered by his uncle Claudius (Anthony Hopkins), the current king, who is now married to Hamlet's mother, Gertrude (Judy Parfitt). Hamlet's unstable behavior troubles his love, Ophelia (Marianne Faithfull), who is further shaken by the death of her father, Polonius (Mark Dignam). Rich playboy Peter Kirk (Henry Fonda) crashes into Dr. Helen Hunt (Barbara Stanwyck) on a ski slope and overplays his injuries so she will continue her medical attention. He declares his love, and, although Helen insists that her career will always come first, the two get married. Soon, Peter is consumed by jealous suspicions of his wife's male patients and embarrasses Helen several times. Fearful of driving her away, Peter launches into character-changing behavior to prove his love.

The Last Angry Man
Dr. Sam Abelman (Paul Muni) is a Jewish doctor contentedly spending his autumn years serving his own Brooklyn neighborhood. But when his nephew, would-be journalist Myron (Joby Baker), writes an article about him, it draws the attention of a producer, Woodrow Thrasher (David Wayne), who believes Abelman a good candidate for a TV show. The doctor, however, is suspicious of the whole enterprise, thinking both Myron and Thrasher are simply out to make a fast buck.

Lovely waitress Kitty Lane (Barbara Stanwyck) is all set to marry the rich and debonair David Livingston (Regis Toomey). But David's snobbish mother, Helen (Clara Blandick), doesn't want her son consorting with Kitty's kind, so she pulls some strings with her powerful friends and has the young woman sent to jail. When Kitty gets out, she takes a singing gig in a nightclub and skyrockets to fame. David tracks Kitty down and tries to rekindle things, while Helen works on a new scheme to deter him.
