Minnesota looks to bounce back after a loss against Northwestern on Wednesday in women’s college volleyball.
For the sixth time this season, No. 15 Minnesota (12-6) is looking to bounce back after a loss. The Golden Gophers take on a Northwestern (4-12) team that has struggled all season with just four wins, two in conference, and are also coming off a loss heading into this match. This season each of the Golden Gophers six losses have come against teams that were or are currently ranked. It has been a test for this team that has aspirations of winning the schools first national championship. The Golden Gophers have made the semifinals of the women’s college volleyball tournament, getting to the championship match once back in the 2004 season. Bouncing back against the Wildcats with 12 total matches left in the regular season will go a long way towards that goal for the Golden Gophers.

This is the first and only match between the Golden Gophers and the Wildcats this season. Last season the teams played twice with the Golden Gophers winning both, the first at home in a five-set thriller and then on the road in a four-set match.
Senior Melani Shaffmaster has been the orchestrator of the Golden Gophers success this season and for the last five seasons overall. She leads the team with 592 assists, over 500 more than the next most on the roster and is tied for the most service aces (19) this season.
The rest of the offense around Shaffmaster features Julia Hanson (220 kills, 10 service aces) and Lydia Grote (191 kills, 18 service aces) scoring and making plays around Shaffmaster. Overall the Golden Gophers have a lot of firepower on the offensive end to bounce back and get back into the win column against the Wildcats in this match.
