Marquette comes off an upset second round win at Utah by taking on regional host and top seed Penn State on Friday in women’s college volleyball.
Marquette (25-8) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen as a No. 5 seed, upsetting No. 17 Utah in Salt Lake City in the second round to earn a matchup with No. 1 regional seed and host Penn State (31-2) at the Rec Hall in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles bounced back from a loss at Creighton in the Big East Conference tournament to advance while the Nittany Lions, who shared the Big Ten title with Nebraska, come into the regionals with eight straight wins.

Penn State, the only program in the country to play in every NCAA tournament since the organization began sanctioning it in 1981, topped North Carolina 25-21, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-15 on Saturday to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Jess Mruzik put down 21 kills, while Maggie Mendelson and Taylor Trammell each posted six blocks in the win. Gilliam Grimes made 16 digs and Ava Falduto notched two aces. Mruzik leads the team with 470 kills, while Grimes has 35 aces and 456 digs. Mruzik and Mendelson share the team high with 16 blocks each.
Marquette outlasted Utah 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 24-26 and 15-12 on Dec. 6 to advance. Aubrey Hamilton notched 20 kills and two aces, with Carsen Murray making four blocks and Yadhira Anchante posting 25 digs. Hamilton has a team-high 424 kills, while Jenna Reitsma served up 45 aces. Hattie Bray has a team-best 11 blocks and Anchante leads the club with 382 digs.
The teams have met just once previously, with the Nittany Lions posting a sweep of the Golden Eagles at Marquette Challenge in Milwaukee on Sept. 13, 2013.
