    A Top 20 matchup will take place Wednesday night as No. 6 Wisconsin hosts No. 16 Minnesota in women’s Big Ten volleyball action.

    On Wednesday night, a Big Ten battle will take place between No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 16 Minnesota in women’s college volleyball at UW Field House. The Golden Gophers come into Wednesday night’s contest with an overall record of 17-9 and a conference record of 10-6 for a spot in seventh place in the Big Ten standings. The team most recently broke its three-match losing streak with a four-set win over Michigan on Sunday.

    Julia Hanson led the Gophers offensively, finishing the match with 24 kills on 50 swings. Lydia Grote and Mckenna Wucherer also had double-digit kills with 16 and 10, respectively. Melani Shaffmaster had a strong showing in the win, earning a double-double with a team-high 47 assists as well as a team-high 18 digs. With Wisconsin being the team’s strongest competition remaining this season, the team has a chance to move up in the standings and earn a better position in postseason play should the Gophers make it in.

    The Badgers will be looking to extend their win streak from five to six matches on Wednesday night with a win at home. The team is currently 20-5 overall and 14-2 in conference play, which puts it in third place behind Penn State in second and Nebraska in first. On Saturday, the team played UCLA on the road, winning in four sets against the Bruins in the teams’ first ever Big Ten meeting.

    Sarah Franklin had a strong showing in Los Angeles, leading the team offensively with 19 digs, while Anna Smrek and Julia Orzol pitched in with 16 and 11 kills, respectively. Saige Damrow came up with 15 digs to lead defensively, but Orzol wasn’t far behind with 12 digs to earn a double-double in the win. Overall, the team hit for an impressive .402 percent on the night and was able to return home with its fifth straight victory.

    These two teams have met a total of 30 times and Minnesota holds the advantage 20-10. The teams have already met once this season and Minnesota was victorious in a five-set victory to open conference play.
