There is only one game separating Rutgers and Iowa in the Big 10 standings when they start conference play on Thursday night.
Rutgers tries to get back to .500 when they host Iowa for each team’s first conference game of the season. Iowa meanwhile is sitting at 6-6 and trying to avoid losing three in a row. The Hawkeyes are still looking for their first win on the road with an 0-2 record. Iowa dropped the finale of the Kwik Star Klassic in its last game losing 3-1 to Drake on Saturday. Senior Gracie Gibson had a great game though grabbing 29 kills, nine blocks and a .509 hitting percentage across the three matches against South Dakota, Saint Louis and Drake. For her efforts, Gibson was named to the all-tournament team. Despite her best efforts, Drake still won the match 3-1 and won by a 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20 final score. The third set was the closest and the only one that Iowa pulled off the win. Sophomore Hannah Whittingstall also had a nice performance in the Klassic putting up a career high with 14 kills and 10 blocks. Drake was 4-7 so Iowa is hoping it turns up the volume once Big 10 play starts tonight.

Rutgers bounced back from a loss in its last game after losing to Old Dominion last week. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a win last Friday in Norfolk, Va. after sweeping their final non-conference match against UMEs in a 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 final. The win was the fifth sweep of the season for Rutgers. The competition gets much tougher tonight but being at home should give the Scarlet Knights the advantage.
