On Thursday night, Washington and USC will meet in Seattle for their first Big Ten game of the year as conference play kicks off. This is the first season that the teams will be competing in their new conference after the Pac-12 folded last year and made the move to the Midwest. The Huskies bring an overall record of 3-1-2 into conference play and are on a two game win streak after beating Long Beach State last week in a 2-0 victory on the road. Against the Beach, the game was scoreless until right before halftime when the Huskies were awarded a free kick. Kolo Suliafu served the ball into the box and Kalea Eichenberger was able to get her head on the end of it to make it a 1-0 game. Right after the break, Radisson Banks put the second goal in with an assist from Alex Buck to extend the lead. Mia Hamant made three saves in net to earn her fourth shutout of the year.

The Trojans are right on the cusp of breaking into the Top 25 with a strong record of 4-1-1 so far this season. The team’s only loss came against No. 1 Stanford its last time out in a narrow 2-1 defeat on the road. The Cardinal got on the board early with a goal in the sixth minute and they made it a 2-0 game just before half. Shortly after halftime, the lead was cut in half after Helena Sampaio crossed a ball that ended up in the back of the net after deflecting off of a USC defender. Despite an improvement in play and increase in possession in the second half, the Trojans were unable to find the equalizer, however, the test against the top-ranked team proved to be a good one as USC enters Big Ten play.
