On Thursday afternoon, fifth-seeded Rutgers will look to pull off its second upset of the Big Ten Tournament with a win over top-seeded USC at CITYPARK in St. Louis. The Scarlet Knights finished off the regular season with a conference record of 6-2-3 and an overall record of 11-3-4. The team was paired against fourth-seeded Michigan State who spent several weeks at No. 1 this season. In a thrilling back-and-forth battle, Rutgers pulled off the upset with a 2-1 overtime victory. Just 37 seconds into the match, a miscommunication from the Rutgers defense resulted in an own goal to put the Spartans on top 1-0. In the 31st minute, Gia Girman put in the equalizer and the teams went into the locker room square. The game ended up in Golden Goal overtime where Ashley Baran scored the game winner with an assist from Girman to advance to the team’s sixth Big Ten semifinal.

The Trojans earned a first-round bye in the Big Ten Tournament after winning the regular season title with an undefeated record of 10-0-1 in conference play. With an eight-game win streak, the team is now 15-1-2 overall after beating eight-seeded Ohio State 1-0 in overtime on Monday. The lone goal of the match was scored just one minute into the first overtime period by Jaiden Anderson to end the game. The Trojans absolutely dominated the game, outshooting the Buckeyes 19-3 with seven shots on frame. Laurence Gladu played the full game in net for USC, but only had to make one save to earn her tenth clean sheet of the year.
USC and Rutgers have only met once in the programs’ histories and the game dates back to 2004 when some of the players on the current squads were not even born. The game with in USC’s favor in a 3-2 overtime victory in non-conference play.
