Samantha Erbach and No. 2 Xavier will take the pitch against Lucy Cappadona and No. 5 UConn on Sunday morning.
The No. 5-seeded UConn will take on the No. 2-seeded Xavier in the championship game of the Big East Women’s Soccer Tournament on Sunday morning at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyd, Maryland. The Mustketeers finished their season with a 15-3-2 overall record and a 7-2-1 record against conference teams. They ended the season with a 2-1 win at Marquette and a 2-0 loss at No. 20-ranked Georgetown. Heading into the Big East Championship, they were the No. 2 seed. They matched up in the semifinals against the No. 6 seed in the conference, DePaul.
Xavier won the game, 2-0, on Thursday. It was a hard-fought game and was even at 0-0 at the halftime break. However, Xavier changed that in the 52nd minute on a goal from Samantha Erbach which was assisted by Samathan Wiehe. Just 50 seconds later after play was restarted, Elin Hansson put another goal in for Xavier as insurance. That goal was assisted by Erbach. That propelled them into today’s championship match.
The No. 5-seeded Huskies are 12-4-4 overall this season and 4-3-3 against teams from the Big East in the regular season. They took down the No. 4-seeded Creighton in the team’s first game of the tournament 2-0. Lucy Cappadona scored her third goal of the season and Chioma Okafor netted her 12th goal of the year in the win.
They moved on to take on the No. 20 ranked team in the nation and the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Georgetown, in the semifinals. Maddie Fried opened scoring early in the 26th minute to give UConn the 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Cappadona scored her fourth of the year in the second half to propel UConn forward.
