Top-seeded Mississippi State will begin SEC Tournament play Tuesday with a game against Tennessee.
On Tuesday evening, ninth-seeded Tennessee will look to pull off a huge upset against top-seeded Mississippi State when the teams meet in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament at the Ashton Brosnahan Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Florida. The Volunteers made it through to the second round following a narrow 1-0 victory over eighth-seeded Kentucky on Sunday. The lone goal of the match came from the foot of Sammi Woods who placed a perfect volley into the back of the net to give the Vols an early lead. Cayden Norris came up big in net with five saves to earn her second consecutive clean sheet and her ninth of the season. Although Kentucky outshot Tennessee 15-5, the only shot that mattered was the one that ended up in the back of the net.

The Bulldogs come into tournament play fresh off of a perfect SEC season which found them going 10-0 for a conference title and 16-1 overall which saw them earn the No. 1 spot in the national rankings. The team is on a 13-game win streak with the most recent being a 2-1 victory over No. 14 South Carolina to close out the regular season last week. The Gamecocks got on the board in the first 10 minutes of play to take an early lead which stood through halftime. In the 62nd minute, Hannah Johnson scored the equalizer before Kennedy Husbands netted the game winner ten minutes later. Maddy Anderson came up with three saves in net to help her team to an unbeaten conference record.
Tennessee and Mississippi State did not meet during conference play this season. When the teams met last year during SEC play, the game ended in a 3-3 draw. The Lady Vols will look to Woods to carry the offense as the Bulldogs’ defense has not yet seen her in the SEC. The former Big Ten standout is a force to be reckoned with and should certainly wreak some havoc on the Bulldogs’ back line.
