The Bulldogs have been hot since the first kickoff of the season and they haven’t slowed down since. The team comes into Thursday’s semifinal with an overall record of 17-1 and are on a 14-game win streak. While Mississippi State did win its quarterfinal round against ninth-seeded Tennessee, the Vols pushed the Bulldogs to double overtime where Aitana Martinez-Montoya scored the game-winning goal. Hannah Johnson opened the scoring with a goal just before halftime to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room. Tennessee got on the board with 15 minutes left to play in regulation after a corner kick was deflected by a Mississippi State defender into the back of the goal. The Lady Vols had a chance to put the game away in the 99th minute, but a monster save by Maddy Anderson on a penalty kick allowed the team to hold on for Martinez-Montoya’s winning goal.
Mississippi State and South Carolina met in their final regular season game last week and the game was closely contested with the Bulldogs emerging victorious in a 2-1 win to stay perfect in conference play and secure the regular season title.
