Duke and UNC will battle it out for a shot at the ACC Tournament Championship game in women’s college soccer when they meet in the semifinals on Thursday.
In-state rivals UNC and Duke will meet on Thursday night in the semifinal round of the ACC Women’s College Soccer Tournament as they fight for a spot in the championship game to be played on Sunday. The fourth-seeded Tar Heels opened tournament play with a game against fifth-seeded Virginia Tech in which they won 2-0. Kate Faasse netted her 12th and 13th goal of the season with a brace to lead her team to a semifinal berth. The Tar Heels outshot the Hokies 10-5 and denied them any shots on frame, making for an easy day for Clare Gagne in net. The team now has 11 shutout on the season.

As the top seed, the Blue Devils received a bye in the first round of tournament play. The team is now on a 15-game unbeaten streak with its last time out resulting in a narrow 3-2 victory over UNC on Thursday. Hannah Bebar scored her first and second goals of the season to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead before UNC cut that lead in half. Maggie Graham scored the eventual game winner in the 66th minute, her 10th of the year, to put the team up 3-1. While the Tar Heels were able to bring the game back to within one in the 87th minute, its the closest they would get and Duke was able to add three points to its tally and secure the ACC regular season title.
UNC and Duke have met 54 times in their history. Although the Tar Heels hold a 43-6-5 advantage, the Blue Devils have won the last two meetings, both of which came this season with the 3-2 victory last week and a 1-0 victory early on in the season.
