The most important part of the women’s soccer season begins Thursday night for Boston College and No. 13 Notre Dame as the teams meet at Newton Campus Lacrosse and Soccer Field for the first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the year. The Eagles have had a strong start to the season and bring an overall record of 7-1 into conference play. The team is on a two-game win streak with the most recent being a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton. The lone goal of the game was scored just 24 seconds in but was recorded as an own goal. Ella Richards had a shot in the 20th second of play that was initially saved, but the ball bounced off a Cal State Fullerton defender and ended up in the back of the net. Wiebke Willebrandt saw 12 shots in the win and came up with three saves to record her fourth shutout of the season.

The Fighting Irish have also played well in non-conference matches and bring a record of 6-1 into Thursday night’s game. The team dropped its season-opener to Michigan State in a narrow 2-1 loss, but bounced back to win six straight with the last time out being a big 5-0 win over Marquette. Freshman Izzy Engle has been a force to be reckoned with this season and scored a brace against Marquette, marking her ninth and tenth goals of the season. Engle is now ranked second in the country for goal scoring behind Cal’s Karlie Lema who has 12. Freshmen Lily Joseph and Ellie Hodsden also scored in the win. Berkley Mensik netted her first collegiate goal after sitting out last season due to double knee surgery. Notre Dame has now outscored its last six opponents 22-0.
When these two teams met last season, Notre Dame was ranked No. 11 and earned a 3-1 victory at home in South Bend. Tune in Thursday night to see if the Fighting Irish can extend their win streak to seven games with a win in the ACC opener.
