Lucy Olsen leads new-look Iowa against a rebuilding Virginia Tech team in women’s college basketball.
Heading into this season two of the teams with the biggest changes are unranked Iowa and Virginia Tech. Both teams started off the season with a win and look to remain undefeated after this matchup. The Hawkeyes and the Hokies are in a new era with new head coaches and stars that either moved on to the WNBA or transferred to another school. Lucy Olsen fills in a Caitlin Clark sized hole for the Hawkeyes with her unique scoring and playmaking. Last season Olsen finished third in the country in scoring behind Clark and freshman JuJu Watkins. This season she has the opportunity to lead one of the more underrated teams in the country.

Olsen started the season with 19 points, seven assists and four rebounds in a win over Northern Illinois. Five other players finished in doubles figures, with Kylie Fueurbach (14 points), Teagan Mallegni (14 points), Addison O’Grady (12 points), Tayloe McCabe (11 points) and Hannah Stuelke (11 points).
The Hokies also started the season with a win under new head coach Megan Duffy. This year’s team is led by senior Matilda Ekh after Georgia Amoore transferred to Kentucky and Elizabeth Kitley was drafted 24th overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Ekh began the season with 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. She has big shoes to fill this season and looks ready to lead the Hokies. In her first three seasons, two with Michigan and last season with the Hokies, Ekh has averaged double figures and is one of the best shooters in the country.
