Pennsylvania (3-0) hosts Saint Joseph’s (2-0) as the women’s Big Five Classic gets under way at The Palestra in Philadelphia. The Quakers and Hawks are in Pod 2 of the classic, along with Villanova, and the event culminates with a tripleheader at Finneran Pavilian at Villanova on Dec. 6. Penn was 15-13 last season and coach Mike McLaughlin is back for his 15th season with a record of 246-162 and NCAA tournament appearances in 2014 and 2016-17. Cindy Griffin has coached at Saint Joseph’s since 2001 and is 400-310. Last year’s squad was 28-6 and reached the quarterfinals of the WBIT. Griffin led the Hawks to the NCAA tourney in 2013 and 2014.

The Quakers improved to 3-0 with a 78-47 rout of visiting Siena on Wednesday. Stina Almqvist poured in 27 points, Abby Sharpe added 16 off the bench, Katie Collins went for 13 points and 11 rebounds and Mataya Gayle handed out eight assists. Almqvist averages 19.7 points, Gayle gets 12.0 points per game and Collins posts 10.0 points and 9.7 rebounds a night.
Saint Joseph’s stayed unbeaten with an 84-70 victory at Syracuse on Sunday afternoon as Talya Brugler scored 29 points and Mackenzie Smith added 25. Emma Bosley dished 10 assists in the win. Smith leads the Hawks with 47 points through two games, while Brugler has 42 points and 19 rebounds. Laura Ziegler booked 30 points and 19 rebounds so far and Boslet had 15 assists.
The series has been lopsided, with Saint Joseph’s owning a 43-5 edge. The Hawks have won the last three meetings, including a 77-49 victory at The Palestra on Nov. 14, 2023.
